Week 8 newsletter

8th week

Dear members,

Eight week has been reached and the end is in sight! Don't forget that we've got one last talk in the Engineering Society Lecture Series with the associated pizza this Thursday. Details of the talk and other events of interest are all below.

OUEngSoc Events:

Engineering Society Lecture Series
Weeks 8 - Thursday
Time: 13.00 - 14.00
Venue: Lecture Room 2, Thom Building, Engineering Department
Free pizza is provided after each lecture!

In the fifth and last lecture of the series we will be hearing from Dr Nik Petrinic, University Lecturer in Engineering Science, Fellow of Exeter College and head of Oxford's Impact Engineering Team. Dr Petrinic's research interests cover a range of topics in experimental observation of material behaviour at high rates of strain, birdstrike on aeroengine components as well as various numerical aspects of predictive modelling of behaviour of materials and structures subjected to impact loading. He will be talking about topics connected to design to withstand collision.

11th March - Dr Nik Petrinic: 'Impact engineering - engineering materials and systems'

These lectures are a fantastic way to hear about some of the most exciting research taking place in the department from some of our very favourite lecturers.

Other opportunities of interest:

Bioengineering Day 2010
10th March (Week 8 - Wednesday)
Time: 13.00-18.00
Venue: Imperial College London, Royal School of Mines

"This term, the Oxford Biomedical Engineering Society (OBMES) is collaborating with the Bioengineering Society in Imperial College London to bring to you the Bioengineering Day 2010 with the long term aim of creating understanding, enthusiasm and respect for Bioengineering within the UK. This event will bring together academia, industry and business for an afternoon of exchanging ideas and discovering opportunities. For the first time of the event, this year's theme is "Potential. Realised.".
This event is specially tailored to biomedical engineers and anyone who is interested in finding out more about the field of biomedical engineering. We will be sharing interesting stories about biomedical engineering products from research paper to market place. Speech will be given by our honour speakers from academia and industry."
Please visit our website (www.bioengineeringday.org) or email us for more information. To register, please simply follow the 'Registration' link on the website.
Please see the attached poster.

Bioengineering Day 2010 - CALL FOR POSTERS
"We would like to call for posters of biomedical engineering related research. Your poster will be presented to students and representatives from academia and companies during the Bioengineering Day 2010 in London. If you cannot attend during the day, our committee members are happy to collect your poster and present it for you on the day. If you are attending the event with a poster to present, your travel cost to London will be fully covered by the Oxford Biomedical Engineering Society (OBMES)."
For anyone who is interested in presenting a poster, please email to: biomedical.society@studentclubs.ox.ac.uk with your contact details.

Dorothy Hodgkin Memorial Lecture - 'Crystallography One Century AD (After Dorothy)'
9th March (Week 8 - Tuesday)
Time: 17.00
Venue: Oxford University Museum of Natural History, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PW
Lecturer: Professor Elspeth Garman, President, British Crystallographic Association, Professor of Molecular Biophysics, University of Oxford.
Entrance free!

"Celebrating 100 years since Dorothy's birth.  She remains the only British woman to have won the Nobel Prize for science.
Dorothy Hodgkin was born 100 years ago and the methods of crystallography she used to determine the 3-D shapes of cholesterol, penicillin, vitamin B12 and insulin, have developed enormously in a century.  The structures of large molecules and assemblies such as the ribosome and whole viruses can be now found.  The art of crystallography then, as compared to now, will be described and illustrated, with recent examples."
Organised by the Oxford Association for women in Science & Engineering (AWiSE).

FEST 4th Annual Career Luncheon
12th March (Week 8 - Friday)
Time: 12.00-14.00
Venue: University Club (Mansfield Road, Oxford)
Cost:  FREE for members / £1 for non-members
RSVP: Email fest@herald.ox.ac.uk - spaces are limited!
"A working buffet lunch with companies wishing to recruit diverse candidates with a science/engineering/quantitative background.
Don't miss out on this opportunity to contact companies in technology, research, consultancy and finance! Confirmed attendees are:
 - IBM, a global business and technology leader which does more than make computers and is a FEST sponsor,
